Canna Catalogue. In the year 2006 season we are offering around 40 varieties of canna as rhizomes which we start to sell at the beginning of January. For the first time, we are providing a downloadable catalogue that the customer can download onto his own computer and print on his own colour printer, cannacat.pdf , this is a document in A4 format and includes an Order Form. Statement on Canna Health. Cannas are notably immune to most garden pests and diseases, but gardeners with a particular interest in cannas, and readers of the gardening press, will be well aware of the advancement of canna virus which was unknown not many years ago, and which is now of epidemic proportions. The symptom are plants that have pale streaks and speckles on the leaves, or leaves which are browned, distorted and twisted. In 2005, most cannas that were offered for sale anywhere worldwide were suffering from the disease. Unlike many other canna suppliers, we are being rigorous in eliminating this disease, and the rhizomes that we offer this year grew from plants that appeared healthy last year. National Collection of canna. We hold the NCCPG National Collection of canna comprising some 200 varieties. We are always willing to sell the surplus from this collection as growing plants whenever possible, and we also like to exchange varieties for varieties that we do not already have. Our cannas will be flowering and on display to callers by appointment at our garden in Farnborough from the start of July to late October. We have Open Days during the late August Bank Holiday, August 25 to 28, when anyone is welcome to call and see our cannas without an appointment. The gate opens at 10am, and closes at 5pm . Usually we offer free tea and scones. We make a gate collection of £1.00 which we donate to the NCCPG. In due course we hope to be able to offer more of these varieties for sale in our catalogue. Ornamental Conifers. In 2005, having outgrown our garden at Farnborough as a home for our cannas, we purchased Lincluden Nursery in Bisley. This nursery was already a well-established nursery specialising in dwarf and ornamental conifers. So we now sell some 400 varieties of ornamental conifer! These include the smallest trees in the world (the size of a current bun), the flattest mat, the slimmest needle and the dwarfest Bonsai. We sell the tallest and biggest living things in the world (Seqoiadendron giganteum, Sequoia sempervirens); the most long lived thing in the world (Bristlecone Pine), the pine with the biggest cones (Pinus coulteri) the pine with the longest needles (over 30cm, Pinus palustris); the pine with the fanciest bark (Lacebark Pine Pinus bungeana). But our favourite of all is Pinus mugo 'Humpy', full size when knee high. In case anyone would like to learn about the botanical classification of the various plant families and species which make up the class of conifers, why not take a look at the recently published conifer checklist. Hedging Conifers (Rootballed). We sell around 40 varieties of hedging conifer during the winter season, in heights of from 0.5m to 2m. All these are freshly dug from the field to meet each order. Root-balled trees should be planted between the months of October to March. Pots and planters. We sell many sizes of black plastic commercial flower pots and planters, from size 1 litre to 500 litres. These include all the sizes you may need for pot cultivation of cannas and conifers and other specimen plants. We can send most sizes by mail order. LATEST
NEWS PICTURE GALLERY Some customers have kindly sent us photos of their successes with our rhizomes. More pictures of cannas in flower are always very welcome. LECTURES We give lectures on cannas to clubs and gardening societies. If you are a member of a gardening club, then please mention this to your events secretary. We can also provide after-dinner entertainment on a horticultural theme (or any theme) - poems, readings, songs (no kidding). VISITS We welcome visitors to our nursery at any time that we are open, to see our cannas and conifers. We also welcome visitors to see our garden in Farnborough by arrangement. Visits can be arranged for larger groups such as gardening societies and clubs for which a charge is made of £1.50 per person, and includes tea and home-made scones. NCCPG We are supporters of the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens. LINKS Some interesting canna links around the world Canna Blog: http://www.clainescanna.co.uk/APage_News.htm History and news about cannas. British Conifer Society A newly formed society with lots of enthusiasts and great experts who share their knowledge. This year we had several visits and tours, firstly behind the scenes at Kew Gardens where we were hosted by Aljos Farjon, conifer taxonomist, who has recently published the revised standard reference on conifers RBG Conifer Checklist. We also had a visit to see several conifer places in Derbyshire, including Chatsworth, and a residential tour of some conifer places in Scotland. © Copyright Hart Canna 1998 to 2006 |
